Gadget wish list

One of the neat things about hanging out with all the cool people that flock to Media Center events is the moments during the breaks. While people are often talking about the latest industry trends and how their businesses could hook up, they are just as often showing off their latest gadgets to one another. Whether it's a Palm Treo 650 Smartphone, a BlackBerry 7100G, or (my personal new favorite) an Olympus WS-200S digital voice recorder the show-and-tell game in some ways resembles car fanatics bouncing the hydrolics and letting the neon glow while the hubcaps spin and the bass makes its own breeze.

After I received a magazine assignment to write about the latest business technology trends, I figured "Who better to ask than the Morph audience?"

So, tell us about your favorite gadget, and why you love it, or what's on your "must have" list and why.

From the Onion ... Congress Abandons WikiConstitution

I was waiting for a friend in a restaurant and reading the print edition of The Onion last night. This made me laugh out loud, so I thought it might make one or two of you laugh as well...

Congress Abandons WikiConstitution September 28, 2005 | Issue 41•39

WASHINGTON, DC—Congress scrapped the open-source, open-edit, online version of the Constitution Monday, only two months after it went live. "The idea seemed to dovetail perfectly with our tradition of democratic participation," Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said. "But when so-called 'contributors' began loading it down with profanity, pornography, ASCII art, and mandatory-assault-rifle-ownership amendments, we thought it might be best to cancel the project." Congress intends to restore the Constitution to its pre-Wiki format as soon as an unadulterated copy of the document can be found.

Pac-Man turns 25

... "Holy crap, " as my wife said in an IM to me. I mention Pac-Man turning the corner and heading ever closer to the big 30 because I think it's a good reminder that nearly everyone graduating this spring (from high school AND college) never knew a world without the hungry yellow circle. A good thing to keep in mind as media companies weigh what innovations to embrace as they try to steer clear of the ghosts that loom around every turn.

No 'Net for Nats? Hardly.

I'm one of the many who have been caught up in Washington Nationals fever. I'm proud to say that I bought my gear all the way back in December of 2004, and even have the speeding ticket I got on the way to RFK Stadium as proof.

So this morning I'm reading a story on page A1 of The Washington Post "Beguiled by the Boys of Summer" that talks about the Nats' improbable 10-game winning streak and how the team now departs for the West coast with its hometown fans falling head over heels after decades without baseball in D.C.

Garden State of Mind

So I've been hanging out with my new bestest friend, Zach Braff, all week. Man, what a funny guy. Well, ok, it's only been online. And ok, full disclosure, he has no idea who I am. But I certainly have gotten to know him in ways that just a few years ago would have been impossible for a working stiff like me.

I recently rented the film Braff wrote, directed and starred in, 'Garden State'. This is now easily one of my favorite movies ever, and in my opinion could be considered 'The Graduate' of my generation.

Hype over Tyson and others leaves some fighting mad

ESPN.com's Tim Keown takes the media to task for the hype surrounding the upcoming Mike Tyson fight, though he never calls anyone out individually, instead writing "I must have seen 25 different media reports – print and broadcast – in the last few days, and every one of them mentions the same reason for the disproportionate coverage of an overdone fighter's final gasps: Tyson's inexplicable hold on the public."

He goes on to explain that the only people still carrying an interest in Tyson are in the media.

PlayStation informs Santana, keeps him Young at heart

Over the past few years, video games have become more and more advanced, and the technology has included attaching dozens of electrodes to actual athletes in an attempt to better simulate their real movements. I've suspected for a long time that it would make sense to use these games as a learning and teaching tool for athletes.

So I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Johan Santana, he of the 2004 AL Cy Young Award and a ridiculously dominant recent record for the Minnesota Twins, prepares for opponents by locking himself in a room and playing PlayStation.

The new normal

I'm a huge fan of the sitcom Taxi. One of my favorite episodes featured Danny DeVito's Louie De Palma character attempting to land the apartment of his dreams. At one point he says to buddy Alex "Ohhhh, a microwave oven! I heard that if you stand too close to these things they can make you sterile."

Unable to contain his child-like giddiness, the next shot shows Louie leaping up on to the counter and fitting his 5'1" frame around this fascinating piece of technology.

That is the best way I can sum up how excited I am about all the consumer technology advances I've introduced into my life in the past 12 months and how they've made me sometimes question where I really live. Another plus is I don't have to worry about possible negative health effects.
