My Gmail inbox was completely out of control. I finally fixed this thanks to a simply, nifty search trick. Just put

label:inbox is:unread

Into the search box and it show only unread mail in your inbox. With all the newsletters and other junk that I keep thinking I want to receive flooding in, this is pretty vital.
